Alice's First Warehouse Party
Where do you buy your books? I have some favourite books-and-mortar sellers; love a good second-hand shop and also buy on-line. But when I buy on-line, I give zero thought as to which seller I go with - until now.
Last week, Alice Campion (ie myself, Denise Tart, Jenny Crocker, Jane St Vincent Welch and Madeline Oliver) scored an invitation to her first warehouse party. Luckily it was not in some funky, dark cavern in Newtown with lots of beards (Alice's sons and daughters go to those). Instead, it was in a very modern warehouse in Lidcombe.
The occasion? booktopia's 11th birthday an official opening of its headquarters and distribution centre. There were warehouse tours, a thank-you to the company from best-selling author Michael Robotham, champagne and a take-home book bag (containing The Painted Sky!).
But the most interesting thing for me about the night was that it made me really think about where and how I spend my book dollars. What did I learn? booktopia is Australian-owned (and so pays taxes!) and gives a substantial chunk of support each year to vital literacy programs. Big ticks in anyone’s book.
